George Müller’s journals reveal how he put these principles into practice. In the fall of 1845 he began praying to God for help in building an orphanage. That December he wrote how God used Scripture from Ezra to encourage him in his vision. A few days later he began to look at possible building sites. All were too expensive.

On January 31, 1846, he wrote: “It is now eighty-nine days since I have been daily waiting upon God about the building of an Orphan House. The Lord will soon give us a piece of ground.” He continued to pray although he saw no answer.

Five days later, George talked to the landowner of one of the sites he had visited in early January. The man offered to sell him the land at a little more than half the price he had originally intended to charge. Müller was able to buy seven acres.21

What do Müller’s guidelines have to do with unanswered prayer? To get my own heart in “such a state that it has no will of its own” is so important. I must wait for the request to be God’s purpose and desire, and for the timing to be God’s timing. Don’t allow the barrier of unanswered prayer make you think that God doesn’t care or that he has not taken notice of your petition. One of Müller’s journal entries reads, “Finally, after I sought the help of God for six hundred and seven days, He has given me the desire of my heart” (emphasis mine).22 This is what it means to pray through.
